Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish was founded in 1907 to care for the spiritual needs of a handful of families who lived in Delmar and
on the farms in its environs. For the first years of its existence the parish met in the homes of its members and in a rented building
that still stands at the corner of Kenwood and Borthwick Avenues.
The first church building was begun in September 1923 and completed the following year. That building served the community until
September 1962 when the present church building was dedicated. The parish now serves close to 3000 households numbering
nearly 8500 individuals. In addition to the church we have a school (Pre-school through Grade 8). The school was completed in
January of 1957 and was staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. At the present time the school has 235
students and an entirely lay staff.
Our Faith Formation/Youth Ministry Program serves over 1000 youngsters. Faith Formation has under its umbrella the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults, Adult Education, Sacramental Preparation, and Intergenerational Programs.
Moses wish "Would that the Lord might bestow his Spirit on them all" is the prayer and goal of our community. We have well over
400 of our members ministering in liturgy, catechesis, service and outreach. Those who serve range in age from pre-teens to the
elderly. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to share his/her gifts and talents.
While we are busy building the Kingdom here in Delmar, we wish our community to look outward as well. We belong to a diocesan
and a universal church, so we set aside 5% of our weekly income to respond to local, diocesan and world-wide requests for
assistance.
